MDS Purpose
MDS provides certified medical driving evaluations, adaptive equipment prescriptions, and driver rehabilitation.
The Need
Experienced drivers undergo medical, physical, cognitive, and/or vision changes that may impair or prevent safe driving.
MDS Solution
A licensed Physical Therapist who is also a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist provides education, evaluation, and/or training as needed to assist with driving decisions.
Who Needs MDS?
Experienced drivers who are referred by a State medical review board, physician, loved one, or even by self-referral.
Services MDS Provides
Driving means freedom, independence, and quality of life; however, it is also a responsibility and a legal privilege. MDS can help experienced drivers navigate and maximize driving opportunities. For many, this can extend their driving career. For some, driving retirement may be the appropriate solution. Here are some services MDS provides that can help with the decision making process.

Trying to continue/return to driving after a life changing event?
If you have undergone a medical, physical, cognitive, and/or vision change(s) that brings into question your abilty to continue or return to driving, you may benefit from a certified medical driving evalution.

Trying to continue/return to driving but require clearance from a state Medical Review Board?
If you are under medical review for driving by a state department of motor vehicle’s medical review board or trying to get your driving privilege reintstated, you may benefit from a certified medical driving evaluation.

Trying to continue/return to driving but require adaptive equipment?
If you require adaptive equipment to drive such as a spinner knob, hand controls, or a left foot accelerator, you may benefit from a certified medical driving evaluation.

Trying to continue/return to driving but desire a professional opinion?
If you want to continue/return to driving but want the reassurance of an objective, professional, third party opinion to help you define safe parameters for your current driving goals, you may benefit from a certifed medical driving evaluation.

What is the process, how much does it cost, and how do you get started?
MDS is not a Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare, or other medical insurance provider. Certified driving evaluations are not considered a “medically necessary” service. As a result, they are not covered by medical insurance. They are an out-of-pocket expense.
